Movie Name: Gangubai Kathiawadi
Cast: Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgan, Vijay Raaz, Seema Bhargava, Jim Sarbh
Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Gangubai Kathiawadi Movie is on real incidents. It’s about a woman of the Bombay underworld era. The story has also portrayed the story of Mafia Queens of Mumbai: Stories of Women from the Ganglands, a book written by S. Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges. The cast members in focus, are Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn, Vijay Raaz, Seema Bhargava, and Jim Sarbh.
The director of this movie is filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He has given the industry masterpieces like Black, Padmaavat, Bajirao Mastani, etc. Gangubai Kathiawadi was released in theatres nationwide on 25 February 2022.
Ganga (Alia Bhatt) is an innocent Gujarati teenager from a wealthy family. She leaves home with her lover, who promises to offer her a breakthrough opportunity in Bollywood. However, he takes her to the infamous Kamathipura in South Bombay and sells her to a brothel run by Sheila Bai (Seema Pahwa). Despite this unfortunate incident at her tender age, Ganga does not give up. Instead, she becomes the leader of thousands of sex workers and their children in the brothel. She becomes a mafia figure and fights for their rights. Ganga eventually becomes Gangubai and has to face many hindrances in her movement. Nonetheless, she faces all circumstances with bravery. Throughout the movie, she wears white-colored dresses, which adds to her boldness.
Gangubai Kathiawadi beautifully portrayed the era when the mafia was prevalent in Bombay. One can know about this period through the wall posters, and old songs played in the background. Like other films Sanjay Leela Bhansali has directed, he has marvelously presented the grandeur and finesse in Gangubai Kathiawadi.
Alia Bhatt’s performance is remarkable, and she made full use of the script based on her. We can very well say that it’s one of the best performances of Alia Bhatt in the industry. Ajay Devgn has also given an impactful performance in his cameo role. The songs except Dholida are not that impressive, yet, all picturization is perfect. The only drawback of this film is that it does not cover much of Gangubai’s later life. Nonetheless, the movie is another Bhansali masterpiece, and IndiaCafe24 gives it 4.5 stars.
