A Home Bathed in Yellow, a Heart Filled with Bappa

Today, if I had to choose one colour to describe my heart, my home, and the feeling that surrounds me, I would choose yellow.

Not because yellow is merely bright or beautiful, but because today, yellow feels like faith, happiness, hope, wisdom, warmth, and new beginnings.

It is Ganesh Chaturthi, and my home feels different today. There is a certain stillness in the morning, even though everyone is busy preparing. The air seems softer. The rooms look brighter. Somewhere between the fragrance of flowers, the sound of bells, the sight of modaks, and the gentle chanting of Ganpati Bappa Morya, I feel as though my home has transformed into a small, sacred world.

And yellow seems to belong here.

I begin my morning by cleaning and arranging the space where we will welcome Lord Ganesha. I choose yellow flowers for the decoration. Their colour immediately catches my attention. They remind me of sunshine entering through a window after a long night. I place them around the idol carefully, and as I do, I find myself smiling.

There is something comforting about preparing a place for someone I believe will bring blessings into my home.

When I finally look at the beautifully decorated idol of Lord Ganesha, I feel a quiet gratitude rising within me.

I think about everything I have asked for over the past year, success, peace, good health, happiness, opportunities, protection, and strength. But today, I realise that perhaps I have been asking for too many things without pausing to appreciate what I already have.

Ganesh Chaturthi reminds me to begin again.

And yellow reminds me to begin with hope.

As I light the diya, its golden glow blends beautifully with the yellow flowers. For a moment, I simply sit there and look at the flame. I don’t feel the need to say anything. Some moments do not need words.

I think of Lord Ganesha as Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles. But today, I wonder whether every obstacle needs to disappear.

Perhaps some obstacles are meant to teach me patience.

Perhaps some delays are meant to teach me trust.

Perhaps some disappointments are meant to redirect me.

Perhaps some endings are actually invitations to begin again.

That thought makes yellow feel even more meaningful.

Yellow is the colour of wisdom, and wisdom is not simply knowing what to do. Sometimes, wisdom is accepting what I cannot control and still choosing to move forward with faith.

As the family gathers for the Puja, the atmosphere becomes joyful. Someone brings the flowers, someone arranges the offerings, someone checks the modaks, and someone reminds everyone that the aarti is about to begin.

The house fills with the sound of bells.

I join my hands.

As we sing the aarti, I feel a warmth inside me that has nothing to do with the lamps or the sunlight. It is the warmth of belonging, to my family, to my traditions, to memories passed down through generations, and to the simple faith that makes ordinary moments feel extraordinary.

I look around and notice how many shades of yellow are present.

The flowers.

The marigold garlands.

The golden light of the diya.

The yellow sweets and offerings.

Perhaps even the sunlight seems to have chosen yellow today.

And suddenly, I realise that yellow is not just the colour I see.

It is the colour I feel.

I feel hopeful.

I feel grateful.

I feel peaceful.

I feel connected.

I feel ready to welcome something new into my life.

Ganesh Chaturthi, for me, is not only about bringing an idol home. It is about bringing a reminder home—a reminder to make space for wisdom, humility, kindness, courage, and fresh beginnings.

It reminds me that before I ask life to change, perhaps I should also be willing to change myself.

So today, as I stand before Lord Ganesha with folded hands, I make a small promise to myself.

I will worry a little less.

I will trust a little more.

I will complain less about what is missing and appreciate more of what is present.

I will face my obstacles with courage instead of fear.

And whenever life feels uncertain, I will remember the warmth of this morning,the flowers, the prayers, the family gathered together, and the golden glow of the diya.

If colours could speak, I think yellow would say:

“Have faith. You are beginning again, and beginnings can be beautiful.”

Today, my home is decorated with yellow.

But more importantly, my heart is filled with it.

Yellow is my colour today because Ganesh Chaturthi has filled me with the light of hope, the warmth of gratitude, and the wisdom to believe that every new beginning carries a blessing of its own.
