Dr. Kalam took charge as the 11th president of India Succeeding 10th president K R Narayan in 2002. He won the presidential election with a vote of 922,884 against 107,366 of Lakshmi Singhal. His tenure term was from 25thJuly, 2002 till 25thJuly, 2007. Dr. Kalam was one among those 3 Indian presidents who got honored with highest Civilian award the Bharat Ratna well before taking charge of the responsibility as president. He was one of the most popular presidents of India and was known as People’s President.He was the first ever scientist and bachelor president of India. Appreciation and Criticism was part of his presidential tenure. The criticism was because of his inaction towards handling the fate decision of mercy petitioners which were 20 in number during his tenure. News was there that he was all set to contest for the 2nd tenure as president in 2012 but later he decided not to contest although there was overwhelming support and wish of public to see him as president again.
