Premise of The Covenant Of Water
In the year 1900, a 12-year-old girl, who is still grieving the loss of her father, is married off to a 40-year-old man with a young son. The girl’s new family belongs to the long-existing Christian community of Kerala and experiences the tragic death of at least one member from each generation by drowning. Soon the girl takes on the role of the family matriarch and comes to be known as “Big Ammachi” even before she becomes a teenager. Thus begins the extraordinary journey of her life spanning the next 77 years and during which time she faces unthinkable changes along with experiences joys and triumphs as well as hardships and loss.

The author needs to be applauded for making the characters look like real people and setting the scenes like they are happening right in front of the readers. The storylines of the different characters are so intertwined that readers get to know only bits and pieces of the personality of each character at a time.

Set amidst the beautiful and mesmerizing Malabar Coast of Kerala in southern India, the story focuses mainly on the life of Big Ammachi. However, the 700-page long book also offers an insight into the history and geography of the Malabar Coast but also the customs and rules followed by the local community.

This is not one of the books that can be read and understood in one go, even though the author has used simple language that is easy to understand. With so many things going on, readers simply need time to fully understand the context without missing out on vital details to ensure that they enjoy the book.
