My interest in romance novels was aroused after I reviewed a few books belonging to this genre and found them truly fascinating. So, when I got the opportunity to review Just Missed, written by Himanshu Bhatia, I was accepted the same with much excitement. I felt really intrigued by the title of the book, which I felt was not romantic at all. Also, upon receiving the book I found the cover page to be refreshingly unique and perfectly summing up the title in a colorful manner.
Siddarth Gupta, an ambitious and highly successful ISB alumnus meets Shreya Malhotra during his search for a life partner. Shreya, an IIM graduate, and an independent and career-oriented woman is a perfect example of beauty with brains. They start going out together are soon are on their way to get married. Then, fate intervenes in the form of Shivam Malhotra, whom Shreya meets on her flight o Bangkok to attend her friend’s bachelorette. At first, Shivam seems to be a flirtatious and annoying young man, who Shreya cannot bear the sight of. Then as circumstances continue to throw them together, Shreya learns about the soft and emotional side of Shivam through his dairy. Shreya starts falling in love with Shivam but at the same time feels bound by her commitment to Sid.
The best thing about the book is its simple storyline narrated in a simple flowy language that is easy to understand. Even though the plot is somewhat cheesy and seems to have borrowed a lot from Bollywood, the writer has done a really good job of maintaining a balance between reality and fiction. The limited number of characters and the emotional way in which they have been portrayed make the book a great one-time read. In fact, it is one of those books that can be easily made into a good romantic movie.
