Not Every Hero Wears a Cape: Reading Cipla’s Legacy of Care
For those of us who care for children, like me as a parent, it can be rewarding to find literature that instills values such as charity and a sense of community. I found The Cipla Story: A Legacy of Care, published by Amar Chitra Katha, to be one of those rare stories. My son and I cherished the time we spent together reading this comic book as a family.
And as a bonus, it also gave me some insight into medical history…something I would have never thought possible. Reading it with my son made the story feel even more meaningful because it opened up conversations about care, kindness and the people behind healthcare.
The Journey from Innovation to Compassion
Cipla’s journey has always been about compassion and I saw that through this comic book.
Reading the journey really made me see the genuine purpose behind the business- whether it was making anti-malarial medicines during World War II, offering accessible HIV treatment to patients across Africa, or supporting patients and frontline workers during the Covid-19 pandemic.
That is where Cipla felt like a caregiver in the story, not only creating medicines, but showing up in moments when people needed access and support.
The comic brings this out through Cipla’s history and the people behind it. It details the story of Cipla’s founder, Dr. Khwaja Abdul Hamied. He dedicated his life to improving access to healthcare and strengthening India’s pharmaceutical self-reliance. The legacy was later carried forward by his son, Dr. Yusuf K. Hamied, who became closely associated with Cipla’s larger mission of making essential medicines more accessible.
The book also shows children that care can take many forms, from science and research to support for patients and families. This story provides valuableinsights into healthcare, leading with care and empathy. I read this story to my son aloud. The care and compassion of Dr. Khwaja Abdul Hamied truly inspired me when I read this legacy story.
Engaging Illustrations That Simplify Complex Ideas
The bright and engaging visuals made the book easy to follow. They helped explain complex ideas in a simple way, especially for young readers.
One theme that stood out to me was how values can be carried forward across generations. The comic shows Cipla’s journey as a legacy built on purpose, research and care. This story portrays the importance of cooperation in a unique way. I learned about Cipla’s Palliative Care and Training Centre. I also learned that Cipla pioneered inhalation therapy in India and launched its first inhaler in 1972. I commend Cipla’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The team provided essential COVID-19 medicines to patients, ensuring they were safe and accessible, and donated PPE kits and masks to assist the COVID-19 warriors on the front lines.
A Legacy Worth Sharing
I consider it my duty to share stories like this with my friends and extended family, as it showcases that the life achievements you contribute to society are valuable and not the wealth you accumulate. The Cipla Story: A Legacy of Care is a family-led legacy that connects scientific ambition with care, access and purpose.

Final Thoughts
This book is great for the whole family because it allows readers to learn together how values can be the foundation for a lasting family legacy and how compassion and innovation can inspire positive change.
