The various self-help books I have reviewed until now have mostly been related to money matters and career success. So was really excited by the idea of being given an opportunity to review a self-help book that deals with one of the most important problems faced by people today, namely that of losing weight. I was actually quite impressed by the title of Ten Things Your Skinny Friends Don’t Tell You and upon receiving the book, I found its cover page to be equally appealing. The book penned by Keerthi Yella proved to be an interesting read especially as it handled a delicate topic in a subtle manner.
The first section of the book offers suggestions and advice about weight management issues in a funny and interesting manner. The author has used wit and sarcasm to talk about the different aspects of bodyweight issues. Every weight loss tip provided in the book is very well researched and aims to promote body positivity in an intellectually humorous manner. The book begins with a question and answer section and also features anecdotes from the personal life of the author. It also highlights the fact that the perception of beauty for Indian women is plagued by the need for them to be skinny and fair-skinned.
I found the book to be quite unusual besides being truly interesting and helpful for people trying to lose weight. The free-flowing ideas and the easy-to-implement tips and tricks make this book stand apart from the countless other weight loss manuals available in the market today. I appreciate Keerthi for choosing such a difficult subject for her debut book and having the courage and the confidence to bust the various myths associated with weight loss while also providing practical solutions. I wish her all the best for the success of this book.
