The Puranas are amongst the oldest Hindu mythological scriptures and like other such scriptures, they too are extremely intriguing. The tales and stories contained in the Puranas are mostly about the various Hindu Gods, humans, and demons and open doors to great knowledge and wisdom.

Such is the power of these stories that they have been inspiring and guiding people for countless centuries. Satyarth Nayak has selected the 100 best tales from the Puranas and reproduced them in his book Mahagatha: 100 Tales from the Puranas.

Premise Mahagatha

The book comprises 100 stories from the Puranas presented chronologically to establish a sense of connectivity. The stories begin from the beginning of the world and span across ages until the beginning of the Kaliyuga.  For this, the author has used Puranic markers to create a narrative covering the four yugas and offers constant and vivid action for the readers. This ensures that rather than experiencing each story as an isolated event, the readers can understand that all the stories are linked to each other and have a role to play in the grand scheme of things.

The theme of cause and effect is well-maintained across all the stories and helps to enrich the knowledge of the readers about Hindu culture. The tales talk about things like wisdom, karma, past, future, and learnings and enlighten the readers about the past, the present, and the future. The book is an attempt at delving deeper into the minds of the various characters and understanding their motivations. In addition to entertaining the readers, the stories help them to connect the dots of Hindu mythology uniquely and interestingly.

Who Should Read It – Mahagatha

Writing Style Mahagatha

Satyarth has used simple and easy language along with an engaging tone to tell these age-old stories. The beautiful manner in which the stories have been presented is further complimented by the amazing illustrations that are interspersed across the entire book. It helps to transport the readers in time and enables them to visualize how the tales are actually unfolding. The author also needs to be appreciated for the fact that he has managed to retain the essence of the tales while translating them.

The cover page design is extremely beautiful and features the artwork of Lord Shiva in the Ardhnarishwara form, which perfectly complements the theme of the book.
