I often get the offer to review books that claim to be different in one way or another, although most of them fail to keep the promise. Recently, I was asked to review Maheshwar Dayal’s People, Places, Memories, which I am glad to say proved to be an extremely refreshing reading experience. When I first received the book and viewed its cover page, I could not make out what it was about. However, after I read the book,  I felt that both its title and cover page design perfectly match its theme.
The offers an interesting combination of the personal memories of the author interspersed with the experiences of the various people he got to know. All these experiences are beautifully intertwined with the biography of the author’s mother, Hede, who after escaping Nazi Germany, took up residence in India and earned a living by working as a teacher. The author presents Hede as the central character of the book and someone, who is energetic, has an infectious liveliness, is quite talkative, but still manages to be a subtle disciplinarian. Her charcoal sketches form an integral part of the book, which also includes several other illustrations. Overall the book presents a slice of history interestingly and engagingly that makes it truly enjoyable.
The book has been written in a unique style by the author and features handpicked vocabulary along with fluid writing. The lively anecdotes included in the book and the ability of the author to present myriad facts engagingly is the biggest USP of the book. It takes the readers on a journey to a world and time long gone by but which has been recreated by the author with the help of his mother’s notes. I consider this book to be a great addition to my collection, which I would highly recommend for a good read.
