Crime thriller, suspense and murder mystery, detective stories, are a few of those genres that I love to read. But what if you are given the option of suspense with a twist? Well, I, as a reader, just grabbed the book the moment, I got to know that it offers a mix of suspense, and si-fic. Yes, the book here I mentioning precisely is STONED- The untold story of Co-Weed 20 by Gautam Mayekar.
What is the story all about?
Well, the protagonist for this story is Amar. He believes that he is a true example of a superhero. He decided to get back in time via a time machine to fulfill the responsibility of ‘saving the world’. But things happened something different than what expected. After going back in time, he ends up, losing his companion, who was also the man behind the making of the time machine. His friend Mohit turned Co-Weed-20 positive and bid adieu, to this world. Amar himself was narrating the story to the readers when he remained stuck in the past due to Time Machine and that, via Voice Data Recorder of the machine. Oops! I forgot to mention that the city in the story is Mumbai and the entire city, is now a victim of Co-Weed-20.
Now the question that will make readers think is, will Amar manage to save the world and him and that too in 12-hours of the deadline? I don’t want to give spoilers alert as I want readers, especially the suspense- sci-fic lovers, to read it and share their view with me.
Will I recommend the book to fellow readers?
Aha! The answer is going to be a little bit tricky as I will share what I liked and what I don’t before giving the final verdict. It’s not that I never read Time Machine concept books, but I found it a little different with the element of Co- Weed. So first coming to what are elements of the stories I loved.
  • The perfect blending of time-machine concept with Co-Weed (keeping in mind the present COVID scenario)
  • Self-Proclaimed Superhero character I came to meet for the first time, and Yes, I liked it.
  • Addition of fun factor in the story, with the inclusion of Thug Life meme, Nucleya, and similar other aspects in the story.
  • Character shaping of Amar is done beautifully to hold the charm of the story till the end. It is not just Amar’s character, but every big or small character of the story got due justice from the author.
  • The Hinglish punchlines or dialogues, in between the story in various places added the essence of humor which I again liked a lot.
  • The writing style and vocabulary of English used in the story are very simple, and the flow remained smooth.
So, I penned down what I liked. But what I don’t like about this book?
  • In few places, the author missed the linking element from one chapter to another, which in few scenarios left me confused. I need to read back a few more lines one or more times to analyze the connection between the chapters
How is the cover page?
For a repeated time, I mentioned that I give importance to the cover page, just like the story. Here I got the feel of a plane highjack story from the cover page and after reading the synopsis I got a clear view of the cover-page subject.
If asked to give a rating on an overall basis, then it will be 4 points on 5. But, If I exclude the cover page and rate based on the story and other aspects related to it, then I will not mind giving 4.30 points. I appreciate author Gautam that he took the risk of playing with suspense, and sci-fi together, but the overall framing could have been a little better. I, hope to read many more wonderful books by author Gautam. I wish immense success to him and also for his book.
