Book Review: Salman Khan: The Sultan of Bollywood by Mohar Basu

When I picked up Salman Khan: The Sultan of Bollywood by Mohar Basu, I expected a celebrity biography—but what I found was a layered portrait of a phenomenon. This book doesn’t merely chronicle Salman Khan’s films; it attempts to decode the man, the myth, and the massive cultural presence he commands in Indian cinema. As a reader, I felt I was stepping into the turbulent, triumphant, and often controversial journey of one of Bollywood’s most enduring stars. Am I a fan of Salman Khan? Neither a supreme fan nor the one who dislikes him. For me he is an actor, with several blockbuster movies and also a handful of flops. I have seen him maturing as an actor with every passing year. And I must agree that no one other than Salman Khan can host a reality show like Big Boss with so much perfection and authority. Kuch to alag ha… Kuch to baat ha.

Today I am remembering one of my ex-colleagues of my corporate days. Oh Man… for him …. Salman Khan was like a god. Even what he is today he calls THE SALMAN KHAN the real inspiration behind that. Definitely he touched the hearts of many and inspired many like my ex-colleague to transform life in a positive way.

Premise -Salman Khan: The Sultan of Bollywood

The premise of the book revolves around understanding how Salman Khan became more than just an actor—how he evolved into an institution. Maina Pyar Kiya was the first film I watched of Salman Khan… Loved it as I was young too and Mohabbat wali bate dil ko bara sakun deta tha tab. Mohar Basu traces his journey from his early days as a romantic hero to his reinvention as the action-packed, mass-loving “Bhai” of Bollywood. The narrative weaves through his blockbuster successes, public controversies, personal struggles, and unwavering fan loyalty. Rather than following a strict linear plot, the book moves fluidly through phases of Salman’s life, highlighting defining moments that shaped his stardom and public image. Some of the films of Salman which I really liked includes Kick, Hum Saath-Saath Hain, Dabangg, Ek Tha Tiger, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sultan, Tiger Zinda Hai, Tiger 3 and Jai Ho are few among them.

Writing Style– Salman Khan: The Sultan of Bollywood

Mohar Basu’s writing style is engaging, journalistic, and accessible. I found the language crisp and factual, yet infused with insight and interpretation. The author balances admiration with objectivity, neither glorifying nor vilifying Salman Khan. Anecdotes, industry observations, and cultural context are used effectively to keep the reader hooked, making the book an easy yet thought-provoking read even for those who may not be die-hard fans.

Final Verdict -Salman Khan: The Sultan of Bollywood

In my view, Salman Khan: The Sultan of Bollywood succeeds as both a celebrity study and a reflection on stardom in India. It captures why Salman Khan continues to rule the box office and hearts despite changing times and repeated controversies. I would recommend this book to Bollywood enthusiasts, pop-culture readers, and anyone curious about how charisma, resilience, and mass connection can turn a star into a legend. Salman Khan is one such actors of India, Jo samaj ma zada nahi ate ha magar dil ma jagah bana hi lete ha…. Kuch to khash ha … Kuch to bat ha. For me it’s a 4.5 /5 stars read
